Photoshoot for Five, Ilse Moore

With our Photoshoot for Five project, my idea was to get some creatives together, and not just any creatives, but some of the ladies I admire most, because of their superb- and very high quality of work. These ladies are masters within their own genres, and to meet them as friends, knowing we all have different styles, different things we’re good add, and it made for a mutual respect between us all – it was an amazing photoshoot. I ask each of the girls, a couple of things, just to find out how they feel about the industry, and even some tips, and starting with Ilse Moore, here are her answers. Enjoy.

* What is the drive for doing what you do…..why your specific genre or product you produce….

I’ve always loved being involved in the arts in some form or another, from illustration to music and photography. I’m also a bit of an adventurer, so will always look for something new and exciting to do. I absolutely love water, so the challenge of underwater photography was the perfect solution to satisfy my creativity and restlessness.

* What is the one thing Ilse Moore, can’t do without…

Access to great music and lots of humour, whether at home, in the office or elsewhere. I am very uncomfortable in overly serious situations. It’s interesting because as far as visuals are concerned, I’m very attracted to darker themes. Maybe the two balance each other out 🙂

* How….can we make the industry better….by doing what, or incorporating what, or changing what….

Firstly, we can make it better by being responsible in our craft and being honest in our work. There needs to be a genuine desire in us to grow, and go the extra mile in making our work count.

Photography can be such a powerful tool and we should also not undervalue what we do once we’ve figured out how to do it.

I do believe that there is a lot of technical and creative growth in the industry as a result of the amount of support from our peers and I’m confident that we will see more and more incredible work as we continue to have a willingness to teach and learn.

* What is the worst part about the industry…
I love every part of it, whether it’s challenging  or not, but I guess the worst part is the amount of time needed to make it work… It’s an expensive industry that requires a lot of commitment, time and dedication to make it work and I find it highly frustrating when I do not have the time to do all the things I would like to do. We run a second full-time photography business, so until my time can be fully prioritized towards the underwater work, it will always “steal away” time from being in the water or working on fine art shoots.

* What do you shoot with, camera-wise? And do you ever use any other lighting setup than natural light?

I shoot with a Nikon D4 in a custom underwater housing. My favourite lens is the 16mm f2.8 fisheye, but I also use a 50mm f1.4 from time to time.

I started off only using natural light, but have since moved to an above- and underwater continuous lighting setup which gives me a lot more control underwater, especially as nothing ever stops moving!

Ilse is like the friend, I want to always keep with me. Such an amazing, bubbly energy, and a deep beauty she isn’t even aware of. We’ll do this again. Photoshoot for Five.
