“Writing something about Yolandi’s photography is a tremendous challenge. They say a picture is worth a thousand words…so how can I use words to do her photos justice? There is so much to be said and somewhere along the road words fail me.
We all experience different emotions when we see her photos, that is after all a core element of a real ‘stand-out’ photo. A photo grabs your attention because it evokes thought and emotion, as art should. All I can offer is a glimpse of my own experience modeling for her and viewing her photographs.
Working with Yolandi is so effortless and enjoyable. She is very clear about her vision for the shoot and in her directions throughout. Having followed her work for nearly a decade I can trust her judgement with confidence. She knows what she wants and how to achieve it.
She is very versatile in the subject matter she is able to photograph however I have always felt her biggest talent lies in people photography. When Yolandi looks at a person she observes something about their character and then lures those qualities out and relays them onto film. Even when that person has little or no experience in front of the camera, she knows how to make them feel comfortable enough to be natural and spontaneous When I look into the eyes of some of the people she has photographed, I feel as though I have shared a thought with them, a fleeting emotion captured on her camera.
Her photos make me look…and then look again. Certainly because she has the ability to always come up with something new and interesting. I cant wait to be in front of her camera again! – Nadia
