A lovely matric dance in studio

Matric dances are usually done outdoors and at a venue for a location feel, usually before the young students leave for their event, so during the late afternoon light and sun, but this couple wanted a particular look and feel for their matric dance and wanted to opt for a more fashionable studio look, and I was all for it.

Her dress was a lovely deep glittering charcoal color that played well within the studio light, and adding a bit of a blowing fan made for some light movement that just made the whole scene quite a fashionable one. They were naturals in front of the camera and they had a lovely chemistry between them.

The Loci Photography studio is proudly ten years old this year, and have done hundreds of lovely studio shoots, from boudoirs which is the studio’s incredible niche success, as well as amazing portfolios, fitness shoots, and even families and corporates.

This was definitely a first for the studio, because even though I have done dozens and dozens of matric dances, never have it before been asked to be a studio option, and when I was able to style that within the studio environment, the end-result was magic. A lovely matric dance in studio – I can get behind that idea.

The studio hosts a variety of backgrounds, all supporting my darker, moodier style, and all of these were used for their couple images together as well as some singles. Both of these young people have done modeling before and were quite naturally skilled on facial expressions and naturally how to pose so my job was made easy that day, but it is perfectly fine if perhaps it isn’t the case, if someone isn’t too comfortable with posing and really unsure as to what to do – a skilled photographer should be able to help you well, and guide you in the best way.

This studio matric dance was amazing, I love the result –  and I hope it’s an experience to be repeated again for another couple who want this fashionable look.

Recently I’ve started shooting with an incredible constant light from the brand Apurture, and I have to say I’m in love. I’ve shot with strobes all of my life and I’ve always felt I’ve been able to master what I’m good at, but with loadshedding’s unpredictable schedule I had to think of different alternatives when there is no power, and this light can run on batteries for quite some time.
