I had the chance to work with the young, and supremely talented South African filmmaker Sibs Shongwe-La Mer for some press images and Professional High-Profile Photography, as he was still going around the world doing press work for his award-winning controversial film, Necktie Youth.
Sibs is living the African dream, where he took all opportunities, and made it into something….just, gold.
It’s an absolute pleasure to work with him, he moves well with the camera, and it was a stunning collaboration to get his character captured, that which he is comfortable showing to the camera.
He’s young, from what I gather influential, and making very big strides in South African filmmaking, not at all scared to touch on very sensitive topics.
A mobile studio set-up is one of the services Loci Photography offers, as I have clients all over Gauteng, from Rustenburg, to Middelburg, to Klerksdorp, to Vereeniging, the East Rand, most of Johannesburg – and for many clients, it provides a comfortable and convenient service if the studio was to be set up where they are.
I feel Sibs is actually a natural, and I wanted to make some of his character traits stand-out, such as his unique haircut, and the small but of shyness he has, which worked great with an image with him facing away from the camera.
Sometimes it doesn’t work but it makes me think of the late artist, Johannes Kerkorrel, who in many performances, stood with his back to the audience, and still managed to captivate them with his dreamy sound as it was about more than just his stage presence.
Sibs has that young energy, but a very wise way about his as well. I suspect many big things for his career. He is working on a new film, called The Sound of Animals Fighting. This is what I call professional high-profile photography, as I get to work with amazing celebrities and such talented artists, such as Sibs.
