DOING FOOD PHOTOGRAPHY ON LOCATION
Cape Town gets to provide me with a whole different creative mindset of shoots, as I do a variety of different things when I get to visit the beautiful city and surrounding places. This stunning shoot was done in collaboration with renowned chef, and Kokkedoor winner of 2013, chef Mynhardt Joubert, who resides in the lovely town of the Paarl, about 40 minutes from Cape Town’s CBD.
Mynhardt also runs a working kitchen and restaurant from his home, 24 Stasie Street, and is famous for his intimate gatherings with menus and decor that is served with flair and a personal touch.
Mynhardt also is a spokesperson for the KWV wine cellar, and used their wines in most of his cooking and presentations. He is also the custodian of the Cathedral Cellar at the KWV estate, where also presents events curated in the utmost amazing way.
KWV presented two new wines for Mynhardt to promote, and he decided to pair them with things that would go well with their own unique flares and character. The Cathedral Cellar Triptych wine, was to be paired with more of deep smoky, and red meat relationship, and the styling done for its shot had elements of tobacco, deep spices and colours true to a winter’s evening. The Cathedral Cellar Sauvignon Blanc of 2018, was paired with a tropical colour scheme, bright turquoise and pinks and yellows, and had a pairing with delicious seafood, pineapple and coconut. The colour schemes work so beautifully styled together, and the images were captured with the medium format beast Fuji has to offer, the GFX100, which made for an incredible image full of detail and richness. Working together with other creatives when they do what they do best, is a space I love to be in and it’s always a great symbiotic collaboration with chef Mynhardt whenever I get to visit the beautiful Paarl. Doing food photography on location, whether it’s the Cape, Gauteng, my own studio, is a fun, creative project usually and it keeps my brain firing off for new ideas.
