Doing environmental family shoots in Pretoria

Doing family shoots will always be a shoot close to my heart because these are people that come with the most special unit to trust me with capturing their family’s closeness. Capturing families will always be a great moment for me, and I love the jokes and chats that happen whilst we all spend time together.

This shoot was a bit of a two-in-one, where-as the parents came for a fitness shoot within my Loci Photography studio setup and afterwards we did their shoot in the late afternoon sunlight.

The Pretoria Botanical Gardens has been a great backdrop for my family shoots for many years already as there are so many lovely natural spots that seem to love the light that comes through the trees, and as a matter of fact, so does my camera.

Family shoots are all about families and how they grow together, as well as how children physically get older and it’s special and sentimental to capture that with them in a moment of fun and casual laughs.

For smaller children, we usually also suggest the outside, as they can easily feel trapped within a studio environment, and honestly- the studio has many pieces of equipment including cords that can sometimes be irresistible to small hands. Outside they can usually run and play, they enjoy the fresh air, and the photographer works around them to get some good natural smiles and casual moments between family members. Doing environmental family shoots in Pretoria, especially with lovely light like we had on this special day.

I love families who approach shoots in a light-hearted way, knowing it needn’t have to be so strict and posed. Everybody has a story, and when you chat with families, you see how they are put together, who is most like mom or dad, and who is the funniest, usually that is dad trying with his jokes, and we’re there for all of it.
