A newborn shoot at home

A NEWBORN SHOOT AT HOME

This lovely family was blessed with a new baby boy, and he was the personification of gorgeous, I stayed longer at their home only to look at him some more.

Many and most times, intimate shoots like these are planned and booked at the Loci Studio in Pretoria, where the lighting setup and dark grey background makes for the moody style Loci is known for. But sometimes shoots are done at the client’s own home or space of choice, we opted to do this newborn shoot at their home in Selection Park, Springs – on the East Rand.

He made my job incredibly easy that day, and even though that isn’t always the case with newborns, with this one – it was a dream shoot. Location shoots are always fun, it takes me out of my “office” for the day, changes my scenery, and makes the wheels in my head work to be able to see how the client’s home will work best for their shoot, and still provide the high quality I strive for. Lovely natural window light is always a win, and makes for soft shadows and gradients which works well for something like a newborn shoot. For a newborn shoot, I like simplicity and emotion, and enjoy images close to the parent’s faces the most, where they get to interact with their new baby in a personal way without too many additional props.

It’s pure love on a stick, and it’s never more evident than when a new parent holds a new baby. We can’t always script the shoot, some shoots have babies crying or being fussy, and through all of this we pivot as best we could and just use the utmost patience possible to see how best we can serve the family with good shots.

Always shooting with my trusted Fujifilm XT3.
